Located in the northeastern area of the city of Durango and near the historic center, the Ferrocarril Linear Park is a landscape intervention designed to become a new meeting point and transform the quality of life for the population of Durango. ARISTA was in charge of designing the first phase, developed along one kilometer, and is part of a comprehensive project that, in its final phase, will form a 3.24-kilometer linear park.
The first phase includes three main segments known as ‘arms.’ The western arm incorporates an urban forest, sports courts, playgrounds, restroom and commercial modules, as well as a plaza to host a sculpture. The northern arm focuses on addressing the recreational needs of children and young people with physical and sensory disabilities, considering the work of the adjacent state’s DIF unit in this park area. Additionally, the design of the northern arm aims to reflect the site’s and city’s railroad past, integrating metal structures inspired by railroad cars. Each car has a specific use and program, such as sensory exploration and the development of motor skills. Finally, the eastern arm features a large multipurpose plaza, an amphitheater, an outdoor gym, playgrounds, and a new baseball field with bleachers, restrooms, and a small shop. The combination of activities aims to create inclusive and accessible spaces for all ages, usable throughout most of the day, encouraging social integration in an accessible and dynamic environment.
The park connects to an existing network of public green spaces, linking the Cultural Corridor Estación Central, the Ferrocarril Plaza, the Guadiana Park, and the Sahuatoba Zoo. This integration is part of an urban rehabilitation strategy, positioning the Ferrocarril Linear Park as a transformative space that promotes community interaction, fosters the integration of surrounding neighborhoods, and enables physical activity and enjoyment of nature.
